MESSAGE NOTES

TAKING INVENTORY - Deuteronomy 5:6-21

Taking personal inventory is important for 3 reasons:

  1. Wholeness comes from Jesus alone.

  2. Wholeness comes from learning, living and telling God’s commands.

  3. Wholeness comes as we take inventory of our lives in the mirror of God’s commands.

Wholeness comes from Jesus alone – Deut. 5:6

  • Key Concept: God’s desire for you is that you become whole – spiritually, mentally, emotionally, in relationships and physically.

  • Key Verse: John 10:10 Jesus said, “The thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

  • Community Group Application: Community Group members invite others to find freedom in Jesus.

Wholeness comes from learning, living, and telling God’s commands – Deut. 5:1

  • Key Concept: God’s Word is alive. As we learn it and live it and tell it, we experience freedom and restoration

  • Key Verse: James 1:25 But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.

  • Community Group Application: Community Group members hear, learn, and live God’s Word.

Wholeness comes as we take inventory of our lives in the mirror of God’s commands – Deut. 5:7-8; 11-12; 16-21

  • Key Concept: The Ten Commandments can be summed up in one word: LOVE.

  • Key Verse: Luke 10:27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’"

  • Community Group Application: Community Group members gather together on the Lord’s Day and take inventory as they celebrate communion with all God’s people

B. Purpose: Our purpose is to spread the Kingdom of God. We do this by multiplying groups of people who care for each as God's family. We begin by inviting new people to our group and building them to be followers of Jesus. Each person here has the potential to be empowered to start and be the leader of a new group and spread God's kingdom.

F. Opening Question: Do you ever take inventory of your life? If so, how do you do that?

G. Background Information

These verses contain the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are also found in Exodus 20:1-17. It is important to note that God gave these commandments to his people after he delivered them from slavery in Egypt. These commandments are for the good of His people. Following them leads to abundant life. Not following them leads to brokenness and bondage. The Ten Commandments are divided into two groups. The first 4 are how we act in love toward God. The second 6 are how we act in love to other people. Jesus summarized the Commandments as love of God and love of your neighbor.

K. Prayer Time:

  1. Pray for an empty chair representing new people who you want to join your group. Name names of people specifically.

  2. Pray for your group to multiply.

  3. Pray for the needs of the members of the group. It is best to divide into 2 groups one of male and the other female.
