MESSAGE NOTES

From Potential to Legacy - Luke 5:1-11

I. Fulfilling your potential requires a personal encounter with God – Luke 5:1-7

  • Key Concept: Jesus sees you not as you are but as you can be; he created you for His purpose.

  • Key Verse: Psalm 139:13 and 16 - For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  • Community Group Application: See everyone in your life with Jesus' eyes.

II. Fulfilling your potential requires you to deal with the sin issue in your life – Luke 5:8-10a

  • Key Concept: God’s future will never come to us at the cost of our character – Erwin McManus

  • Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 1:26-29 - Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

  • Community Group Application: Understand that your potential is released not by self-effort but by humility.

III. Fulfilling your potential requires you to take the next faithful step – Luke 5:10b-11

  • Key Concept: Your true potential or destiny always involves building Jesus' Kingdom with who you are – your abilities, opportunities and experiences.

  • Key Verse: Luke 16:10 - “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much."

  • Community Group Application: Take the next faithful step today.

B. Purpose: Our purpose is to spread the Kingdom of God. We do this by multiplying groups of people who care for each as God's family. We begin by inviting new people to our group and building them to be followers of Jesus. Each person here has the potential to be empowered to start and be the leader of a new group and spread God's kingdom.
