MESSAGE NOTES

1 Corinthians 12:7-14

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many.

Key concept: God gives us the gifts of the Holy Spirit and we cannot get them apart from God.

1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:1-3‬ ‭NIV | “If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”‬‬

Key Concept: We receive the gifts God has given us

Key Concept: Apart from the love of God those gifts are worthless

Matthew‬ ‭25:26-30‬ ‭NIV‬‬ | “You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. “ ‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’”

Key Concept: God has chosen to give you the ability, and therefore the responsibility, to share who he is with the world around you.

What have I done in last week with the gifts God has given me that would lead Him to say ‘Well done, good and faithful servant”?

A. Welcome

B. Purpose: Our purpose is to spread the Kingdom of God. We do this by multiplying groups of people who care for each as God's family. We begin by inviting new people to our group and building them to be followers of Jesus. Each person here has the potential to be empowered to start and be the leader of a new group and spread God's kingdom.

C. Worship Time: Great are You Lord

G. Background Information

Paul spends an entire chapter discussing the Spiritual gifts that God has given to those who follow Him. Note that God does not want us to be ignorant about the spiritual gifts (verse 1). Spiritual gifts are not natural abilities but rather capacities that the Holy Spirit gives to people as God determines. Each of the gifts is designed to draw people to Jesus. An example is important. A person can have the natural ability as a teacher and be an excellent teacher. Yet their teaching will not draw people towards Jesus. They could even teach the Bible but it would just be a transfer of knowledge. A person with the spiritual gift of teaching will teach and people will be drawn to Jesus. A person could be very hospitable yet their hospitality does not draw people towards Jesus. A person with the spiritual gift of hospitality will be exercising that gift and that will lead people closer to Jesus.

Note also that all the gifts work together as all the parts of the body work together.
