Week 2 Study Guide

Getting to Know the Amazing Jesus: Our Brother

THIS WEEK'S SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 2:14-18

Main Themes: Jesus' Incarnation (Jesus becoming human); Temptation; Victory over Satan; Deliverance from Evil

Background Information

PART A:

Satan seeks to take us away from the purpose God has for our lives. God's purpose for our lives is that we become Jesus' disciples. A disciple of Jesus is a person who:

1. is following Jesus,

2. is being changed day by day to be like Jesus, and

3. is on a mission of making disciples of other people.

The devil (which means literally means slanderer) uses the “3 D's” to tempt us away from Jesus' purpose: Distractions, Doubts, & Defeat.

PART B:

Jesus came to destroy the works and power of Satan (1 John 3:8). The first work of Satan that Jesus destroyed was death. The result of Adam and Eve's sin was that death entered the world. Before that, man was not subject to death. One of the consequences of Adam and Eve's sin was that all people would now die. Read Genesis 3:19 and Romans 5:12. Hebrews 2:15 tells us that through Jesus death we are freed from the fear of death. This is because death is no longer the end, but rather the beginning of our new life in eternity. Read 2 Timothy 1:10. Read 1 Corinthians 15:54-55. The point here is that because of Jesus’ death on the cross, death has been defeated and is no longer the end for a follower of Jesus.

PART C:

Jesus came to destroy the works and power of Satan — 1 John 3:8. The second work of Satan that Jesus destroyed was the power of sin. A disciple of Jesus, through the power of Jesus, now has the power not to sin. The power to live free. This involves learning how to overcome temptation.

An Invitation

Become part of what God is doing and connect with a group. Find a Point of Light Group.

Guide for Point of Light Groups

  1. Welcome: Read the purpose of your group:

Our goal is to grow as disciples of Jesus and to make disciples of other people by inviting them to our group or starting a new group with them.

  2. Worship Time: Spend a few minutes singing a worship song, such as Amazing Grace.

  3. Word: Read Hebrews 2:14-18 aloud together.

  4. Discuss the questions below.

  5. Pray for an empty chair, representing new people you want to join the group. Think of specific people to pray for by name.

  6. Divide into two groups (for males and females) to pray for the needs of the members of the group.

  3. Read part B and discuss why Jesus came. Discuss how the verses teach that death is no longer the end for a disciple of Jesus. Read John 3:16 and ask if everyone has made the decision be a follower Jesus.

  4. Read part C and discuss why Jesus came. Read and discuss the following scriptures together: 1 Corinthians 10:13 and James 4:7. How will this help you in your life?
